First double hundred in a T20 match and a West Indian has done it

Rakheem Cornwall of the West Indies became the first player to score a double century in T20 cricket on Wednesday.

Cornwall scored an unbeaten 205 off 77 balls during a match between Atlanta Fire and Square Drive at the ongoing Atlanta Open 2022 competition in the United States.

Cornwall’s magnificent effort propelled Atlanta Fire to 326/1 in 20 overs, the highest innings total in the game’s shortest format.

Cornwall’s innings contained 17 boundaries and a stunning 22 sixes, with a strike rate of 266.23. Cornwall ripped the Square Drive bowling apart, often hitting them for boundaries during his 205-run innings.

In terms of the match, Atlanta Fire won the toss and chose to bat first at Atlanta Cricket Fields Ground 4 near Chestatee, Georgia.

Batting first, Atlanta Fire racked up 326 runs on the board because to some strong hitting by Cornwall, Steven Taylor, and Sami Aslam.

Taylor and Aslam each scored 53 runs, while Cornwall hit a double century. In extras, Square Drive gave up 15 runs on four leg byes, seven wides, and four no-balls. Square Drive’s lone wicket-taker was Varun Sai Mantha.

Square Drive were held to 154/8 in 20 overs in the second innings. Yashwant Balaji led his team with 38 runs off 22 balls. Varun also contributed with the bat, scoring 36 runs off 22 balls.

Tejas Komatireddy hit 14 off 15 balls, while Radhakrishna Marripati scored 20 off 16 balls. Jeremy De Lima and Devam Shrivastava both provided 10 and 11 runs.

For Atlanta Fire, Justin Dill took four wickets, while Amila Aponsu took two. Corne Dry added a wicket to his name as well.

Atlanta Fire won the game by a huge margin of 172 runs, one of the biggest in the history of the format. Cornwall was named the player of the match for his outstanding knock with the bat.
